David Matthew Powell, a man of profound intelligence, wit, and kindness, passed away on January 15, 2024, in Davenport, Iowa, at the age of 44.
David, called Dave by friends and family, was born on April 8, 1979, in Las Cruces, NM, and also spent his childhood living in Chandler, AZ and Tehachapi, CA, where he played soccer, football, and basketball. He also played basketball at Point Loma Nazarene University, where he studied literature and philosophy, and graduated with high honors. He remained in contact with a number of professors, who remember him as a “quiet genius,” and for years after graduation he attended an annual writers’ workshop in the Adirondacks with beloved professor Art Seamans. David also pursued a master’s degree in American Literature at Seton Hall in South Orange, NJ with a thesis on the poetry of Hart Crane. David continued to work on his craft of writing throughout his life.
Dave was often described as a gentle giant. He was a beloved crew member at Trader Joe's stores in New Jersey and California, where he was known for his quick wit and kind smile that made customers and co-workers feel cared for. David also often reminisced about summers working a salmon boat with friends in Alaska. Above all, David was a devoted father to his son, Winston. Before his health prohibited him from doing so, David most enjoyed taking Winston camping.
David's life was a reflection of the words that best described him: intelligent, funny, and kind. His humor could light up a room, his intelligence inspired others to learn and grow, and his kindness was a gentle reminder of the goodness in the world.
David is survived by his son Winston, his parents, Mary and Allen Bryson, and Larry and Bettina Powell and his sisters, Lisa Powell and Kathy Struve, as well as many other friends and loved ones. His humor, kindness, and insightful conversation will be missed by many.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport, IA, at 4 pm on January 26th, and a memorial for family and friends in California is being planned for the summer to be held in San Diego.
Family and friends are invited to express condolences on his memory wall at mvcremation.com.
