Gary L. Grebner, 76, of Hampton, IL, passed away Monday, December 11, 2023, at Clarissa Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, IA, after a 2.5-year battle with glioblastoma brain cancer.
He was born in Metamora, IL, near Peoria, IL, on August 18, 1947, to Leo and Dorothy (Hoffer) Grebner. He graduated from Bradley University in Peoria, IL, in 1969 with a BS in Manufacturing Engineering/IE.
Gary's career took him from Peoria, IL, to Flint, MI. He then returned to Peoria before moving to Waterloo, IA. In 1997, he relocated to Hampton, IL, where he remained until the time of his passing, along with his part-time residence in Eagle River, WI.
Gary's 38-year career included General Motors, Caterpillar, and John Deere, with positions in Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Management, and OEM Sales. After retiring from John Deere in 2007, he became a consultant for the Midwest Intellectual Property Management Institute and the Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce. During his career, Gary was a long-standing member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), where he held numerous Board positions, including Chairman and Director.
Gary is survived by his wife, Bonnie, of 30+ years, his daughter, Cheri Payne (Charlie) of Las Cruces, NM, and his son, Craig Grebner (Miriam) of Story City, IA. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Caitlyn, Colin, Caraline, & Alina, and his sister, Shirley Klasing of Frisco, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Dorothy Grebner.
Gary will be cremated, and there will be no services per his request. Memorials may be directed to East Moline, Silvis Kiwanis, where Gary was a member and Treasurer for numerous years.
