Gary Samuels

February 25, 1969 — May 26, 2024

Gary L. Samuels, a man remembered for his infectious laughter, courageous spirit, and love for basketball, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2024, in his hometown of East Moline, IL, at the age of 55. Born on February 25, 1969, to Susan C. Samuels (Woods) and Wilbert L. Samuels Sr., Gary's early years in East Moline laid the foundation for a life full of joy, and resilience.

Gary graduated from United Township High School, where he first showcased his exceptional talent in basketball, a passion that would remain with him throughout his life. His love for the game was only matched by the spirit with which he played, earning him the admiration of teammates and opponents alike.

Throughout his life, Gary's sense of humor and spirited nature never wavered, even as he faced challenges with the same courage he displayed on the basketball court. He was the kind of man who could light up a room with a joke and inspire others to face their own trials with a brave heart.

Gary was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Susan C. Samuels and Wilbert L. Samuels Sr., as well as his brothers Wilbert L. Samuels Jr., Malcolm C. Samuels, and Darrell L. Samuels. His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his devoted sisters, Gwen Watford and Lisa Sutton-Hicks.

A proud father, he leaves behind his daughter, Mercedez Roberts, and his son, Bronson Laleman. Gary's legacy continues through his grandchildren, Lyrik, Melody, Landyn, Brayden, and Kehlani Laleman, who will grow up hearing stories of their grandfather's humor, bravery, and the spirited life he led.

Gary's love for basketball never waned, and he could often be found on the local courts.

In every aspect of his life, Gary embodied the qualities that he held most dear. His courage in the face of adversity, his lively spirit in times of joy and sorrow, and his unwavering ability to bring laughter to any situation have left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who loved him.

As we say farewell to Gary L. Samuels, we celebrate the time we were fortunate to share with him. His memory will live on in the stories we tell, the games we play, and the love we share. Gary's life was a testament to the power of laughter, the strength of spirit, and the enduring bonds of family. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
