George Francis Holmes, born on April 6, 1944, in Liverpool, England, passed away at home in East Moline, Illinois, on January 27, 2025, after an extended illness.
George emigrated to the United States in 1977 and enjoyed a long career, retiring after 31 years at John Deere Davenport Works. His commitment to his profession extended beyond his own work, as he took pride in mentoring and training many apprentices over his 43 years as a journeyman pipe fitter.
Outside of his professional life, George was known for his straightforward personality. He was always ready with a good story or a bad joke and was his own best audience. He was always willing to help family and friends with home repairs and was generous with his time.
He and his wife enjoyed numerous cruises with friends and winters spent in sunny Florida, where you don’t have to shovel sunshine. He was a devoted supporter of the Liverpool Football Club, and he never missed an episode of Jeopardy, showcasing his love for knowledge and trivia.
George had a very interesting life, including socializing with The Beatles during their early career at The Cavern in Liverpool. He was also particularly proud of his role as a coach for his daughter’s 12u soccer team and loved seeing the girls continue to play through high school.
He is survived by the love of his life, Elaine, and their children: Joanne (Bill) Woodward, Jessica (Mitchell) Holmes, and Philip Holmes. Also, his daughters Amanda Barr and Debi (Mike) Delaney. He will be forever remembered by his much-loved grandchildren, Liam, Brady, and Zara Woodward, Brogan Larkin, along with grandsons Zak and Sonny Delaney.
George is survived by his siblings Tony (Sharon) Holmes, Madge Rylander, and Joan (Dale) Curless. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Holmes, and his brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Gillian Holmes.
George will be remembered for his great wit and storytelling with his distinctive Liverpool accent. For those fortunate enough to be in his inner circle, he was a generous and giving man. His uncompromising spirit will be remembered by everyone who knew him.
