Joan Block, 97, of East Moline, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at Charter Memory Care in Moline, Illinois.
Joan was born Joan Emily Winnifred Davis in London, England, on February 14, 1927. Joan and her family survived World War II, and in 1945 she met and married Theodore Block, who was stationed in London, a member of the U.S. Army Air Corp. When "Ted" was transferred back to the United States in 1946, both settled down in Bellville, Illinois, and started a family.
As a teenager in England during the war, Joan joined many females helping with the war effort by taking on many jobs needed by the troops. Making things like munition parts, armatures, uniforms and aviation supplies kept London citizens busy, and Joan grew up learning many job skills that she brought to the United States and used for the rest of her life. She was especially skilled at sewing, making alterations and clothing from scratch. She made wedding gowns for brides or stuffed animals for kids. She worked at the Deere-Wiman House (Butterworth Center) altering clothes for the Wimans, worked at many of the clothing stores at SouthPark Mall making alterations, and had her own sewing shop at home taking care of walk-in friends.
Joan went back to London a few times meeting her English family and entertained them when they visited her in East Moline. Joan especially loved her family and friends who lived in the area in East Moline and kept in touch with them until the very end. Joan always had a collie breed of dog at the house.
Joan is survived by her sons Mel (Pat) Block of Edgington, Illinois, and Gary (Karen) Block of Central City, Iowa, and son-in-law Tom Anders of Rapid City, Illinois. She also has five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Joan is preceded in death by her husband, Ted Block, daughter, Barb Anders, son Duane Block and daughter-in-law Brenda Block.
As per Joan's wishes, there will not be a memorial service.
