Kevin Gustafson

February 24, 1953 — December 21, 2022

Kevin R. “Gus” Gustafson, 69, followed his path to heaven on December 21, 2022, from his home in Moline, IL.

Not being a fan of winter, and to keep our friends and family safe, a Celebration of his Life will be held on April 1, 2023, from 1-3 pm at Wendt Funeral Home, 1811 - 15th St PL, Moline. Our family hopes you will join us at that time to share your favorite memories. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.

Kevin was born February 24, 1953, the son of John R. & Dolores Gustafson. After graduating from Cambridge High School, he worked at International Harvester Works and then John Deere Foundry. He was part of the Feelin’ Free band that began in “The Barn.” He then married Teresa and together they had two children. Earning his LUTC Insurance license, to help people in the financial world, he was awarded many times in sales and production. He married Kristi in 1993 and was blessed with a third child. Kevin was also known at several Quad City area auto dealerships, retiring from Zimmerman Honda in 2013.

Gus lived his days to the fullest, his laugh contagious, and he rocked the house with his guitar and songs at any given time. Retirement allowed for writing and creating more music and lyrics, which led to the opening of the “Gust-of-Sun” program. He taught several how to play guitar, ukulele, piano, and sing. He touched many lives with his music and was extremely proud of each and every student, past and present. Most recently, his Wednesday jammers - Jim & J.R., who he couldn’t wait to sing and jam with, and celebrated their successes with anyone who had ears. The three of them became close friends who he cherished.

Along with music, fishing was a huge part of his life. Nothing gave him more joy than when his children, grandchildren, and siblings would join him for sunrise and sunset over the pond, campfires, star-gazing, and days full of fishing where he would pass along his secrets to catch the biggest and most fish. He lived for those moments and treasured each and every one. We can hear him say, “Be the bright spot of someone’s day,” “Follow your path,” “Count your blessings,” “Set the hook, reel ‘em in, and grab the dip net!”...and then that laugh of his through it all!

Those he leaves behind to pass on his bits of wisdom include his wife, Kristi, his pride and joys; children: Valerie (Eric) Wynn, Troy (Lauren) Gustafson, Haley Gustafson (Travis). Adored grandchildren: Avery, Evan, Kashten, Sloane, and Callie. Wonderful Siblings: Lonnie (Susan) Gustafson, Penny Hayes, Marty (Lucia) Gustafson, 7 nephews, and 2 great nieces.

Those preceding his death: His parents, step-parents, grandparents, and great friend and
brother-in-law, Mike Hayes.

His family also wants to thank the Moline police department, Moline fire department, EMTs & paramedics who worked tirelessly to try and save him and support his family on the day of his passing. And a huge thanks to Mississippi Valley Cremation, Jeff DeRoo, and Earl Wendt for their kindness, respect, and assistance throughout.

Family and friends are invited to share memories and express condolences on his Memory Page.
