Lawrence “Sid” M. Casillas, a gentle soul born on February 6, 1950, in Moline, Illinois, passed away peacefully at his home with his wife by his side, on December 29, 2024. He was the cherished son of Elias and Anna Casillas.
Sid was a dedicated individual who spent his entire career at Alcoa, where he contributed his talents until retiring in 2002. He embraced retirement with enthusiasm, delighting in a fulfilling 22 years of leisure and personal pursuits.
A graduate of Moline High School, Class of 1968, Sid demonstrated a steadfast commitment to serving his country as a medic in the Army from 1969 to 1971. This experience, marked by compassion and care for others, mirrored his gentle personality throughout his life. Sid was known for his quiet demeanor and genuine kindness, showing a heartfelt sensitivity to the feelings of those around him. An animal lover at heart, he often extended this compassion beyond just people.
Sid’s interests spanned a variety of hobbies that brought him joy. He was an avid cyclist, often found pedaling along scenic routes. His loyalty to the St. Louis Cardinals was unwavering, making him a devoted fan. Gardening was another passion, where he found peace and satisfaction in nurturing the earth. A thrill-seeker at heart, he also enjoyed the excitement of drag racing.
On February 2, 1985, he married Barbara Bennett in Hampton, Illinois. Together, they shared a beautiful life filled with love and companionship. Sid is survived by his loving wife, Barb; two brothers, Martin (Holly) Casillas of East Moline and Paul (Alexandra) Casillas of Vancouver, WA; two sisters, Rebecca Casillas of Moline and Jann Casillas Ortiz of Rock Island, IL; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and one great-grandniece, MaeMae.
Sid was preceded in death by his parents, Anna and Elias, and one nephew, Andy Ortiz. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth and kindness that will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
