We gather to celebrate the life of Murvine M Kellar, born Murvine M. Meier, a beacon of courage and love whose journey began on April 13, 1951, in Davenport, IA, affectionately known as Marty and who, after a life rich with laughter, kindness, and creativity, left us on September 13, 2024, in the same city that cradled her beginnings. Marty's life was a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, a narrative of overcoming and embracing life's challenges with a smile that could light up a room.
Marty's story is not just one of survival but of thriving against the odds. At the tender age of 18, she faced a devastating accident that would have halted many in their tracks. But not Marty. Paralyzed from the breast down, she transformed what many would see as a limitation into a platform for inspiration and empowerment. Her indomitable spirit was a testament to her loving, courageous, and kind nature. She was living proof that the human spirit can transcend any physical constraints.
Following her accident, Murvine faced a bleak medical outlook, forecasting infertility and reduced life expectancy. However, she confounded these predictions by giving birth to two sons during her first marriage to Darrell Powell and exceeding her anticipated lifespan by nearly three decades, embodying an inspiring tenacity and unwavering perseverance.
Her educational journey was marked by a zest for knowledge and self-improvement. A proud graduate of North Scott, Marty was a lifelong learner who, at the time of her passing, was expanding her horizons at Scott Community College. Her thirst for knowledge was as insatiable as her desire to give and love.
Beyond her academic and professional pursuits, Marty's interests were a kaleidoscope of creativity and joy. From karaoke to crocheting, from making jewelry to diving into the vibrant worlds of digital games, Marty embraced the arts with passion. Her hands were rarely still, always busy creating beauty in the form of crafts that brought joy to those around her. She had an unquenchable love for shopping, reveling in the thrill of discovering treasures and experiences that sparked delight. She loved watching movies and TV shows, especially anything Disney.
Marty's love for animals was boundless and started at a young age growing up in Maysville, Iowa. Her most beloved pet was her horse Pancho, who she trained from a wild horse and rode everywhere. She talked about him often throughout her life, especially in the past few months, when she would tell us about the dreams she had riding him around again. She especially had a soft spot in her heart for those animals with disabilities. She opened her heart and home to them, offering a sanctuary filled with love and care.
Throughout her prolonged hospitalization, Murvine derived immense pleasure from the therapeutic massages, hair and makeup services courtesy of her sister Mickey and niece Kelly, who provided steadfast companionship, nail care from granddaughter Mackenzie, and daily visits from son Rance his wife Brenda and grandson Spencer, which consistently lifted her spirits. These acts of love were not just for her own enjoyment but were shared experiences that brought joy to us as well.
The echoes of her laughter and the warmth of her conversations will be cherished forever.
She was preceded in death by her father, Melvin M. Meier, and Vivian A Meier those left to honor her memory are husband, Dwayne Keller, sons Melvin Powell and his wife Pam, ( Davenport) Rance Powell and his wife Brenda (Davenport) sister Mickey Kosgard and her husband Bill (Bettendorf) grandchildren Josh, Jasmine, Jenifer, Rebecca, Samantha, Shaylynn, Madeline, Kenzie, Mariah, and Spencer Powell, and the special bond she shared with her niece Kelly Langston and her husband Daniel.
Marty's life was a series of moments filled with love, learning, and laughter. She embraced each day with the enthusiasm of a soul who knew every moment was a gift. In the past few months of her life, she found joy in reminiscing with her family, sharing memories that would become their treasures.
