Richard Dale "Rich" Hakes, a beloved husband, stepfather, brother, and friend passed away peacefully on November 20, 2023, due to a sudden illness. Born in Davenport, IA on July 28, 1956, he spent his entire life in the city he loved, and he died in the same place where his story began.
Rich was a proud graduate of West High School, a place where he formed many lasting friendships and memories. His love for learning and commitment to personal growth were evident in his actions and his approach to life. He was an inspiration to many and always encouraged others to strive for their best.
Rich was a devoted family man, survived by his loving wife, Betty Hakes. Their love story was one for the ages, filled with moments of joy, shared laughter, and enduring love. He was also a cherished stepfather to Michele Gillespie Barnes and Susan Gillespie Wyatt, who he treated as his own children. His love and commitment to them were an embodiment of his big-hearted nature. Rich is also survived by his brothers, Bryon and Jeff Hakes, with whom he shared many happy childhood memories and a lifelong bond of brotherhood. His pride and joy were all 9 of his grandchildren 10 great grandchildren and all his Nieces and Nephews.
Beyond his family, Rich had a deep love for the Iowa Hawkeyes. He was a huge fan and could often be seen sporting the team's colors, cheering on his favorite team with an infectious enthusiasm that spread to those around him. His loyalty to the Hawkeyes was more than just a hobby, it was a passion that brought him great joy and connected him with a community of fans who shared his love for the game.
In his life, Rich Hakes was a beacon of positivity, a source of strength, and a symbol of resilience. He lived his life with a spirit of generosity and kindness that will continue to inspire all who knew him. His legacy is not just in the love he shared with his family or his passion for the Hawkeyes, but in the countless lives he touched with his warmth and kindness.
Preceded in death by Edward Hakes (Father), Frances Hakes (Mother), Barbara (Hakes) Tilberg (Sister), David Hakes (Brother), Cecilia (Hakes) Kale (Sister) and Robert Hakes (Brother).
To know Rich was to know a man who loved deeply, laughed heartily, and lived fully. He will be dearly missed, but his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
