December 18, 1943 — January 18, 2025

Robert Ernest Hinton, 81, of Colona, IL, passed away peacefully Saturday, January 18, 2025, in Silvis, IL.  Private services will beheld at a later date.

Robert was born to Charles Ernest and Mary Ellen Hinton on December 18, 1943 in Bement, IL.  He began working at a young age delivering newspapers and washing dishes at a local restaurant.  After graduating high school, he earned an engineering certificate from the University of Illinois and embarked on a 30-year career with the Illinois Department of Transportation.  Robert was instrumental in several landmark projects including the construction of the original I-74 bridge, construction of sections of Interstate 80, refurbishment of the Centennial Bridge and the I-80 Bridge over the Mississippi River and various other infrastructure projects across northwest Illinois.  Later in his career, he managed IDOT maintenance crews in Rock Island County ensuring state routes remained safe year-round.

Robert married Marilyn Monroe with whom he raised three children.  In retirement, Robert enjoyed gardening in his yard, woodworking, restoring antique furniture, and being outside in warm weather, hobbies that reflected his appreciation for life's simple pleasures.

He is survived by his three children:  Scott (Tara) Hinton of Geneseo, Illinois, Susan Hinton Lohman of Moline, Illinois, and Karin (Chuck) Barrett of Colona, Illinois.  He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren:  Hunter (Megan), Meredith, Jackson (Lily), Benjamin, Erin, and Sarah.  Robert took great joy in welcoming his first great-grandaughter, Francesca, into the world.  He is also survived by his sisters, Marian Cooper and Evelyn Bowlin.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, and his parents, Ernest and Mary Hinton.
