Susan Melinda Lewis took her final trip, somewhere over the rainbow, from her home on October 27th, 2023. She was surrounded by her loving family and fur babies.
The only child of G. Douglas Lewis and Marion (Mardis) Lewis, Suzy grew up in the same home in which she passed. After graduating from Moline High School, she attended Augustana College, achieving a Bachelor’s Degree. After graduating she wrote a well-known column in the Daily Dispatch. Suzy was always fond of this position as it connected her to the world of celebrity and music, both locally and nationally. Suzy always loved the theatre, she influenced countless lives in her many roles over the years with Davenport Jr. Theatre. After various jobs, Suzy settled into her most recent career with Genesis Hospitals, a position she held for the past 15 years.
Suzy was a shining example of a person who worked to live, giving her the time to pursue her passions. She was an ardent fan of Joan Jett. When asked how many Joan Jett concerts she had seen? Suzy answered: “too many to count”. Suzy also had the opportunity to do many things which meant a great deal to her; travel to New York City, Drive the famous Route 66, meet regularly with those from the AAGPBL, as well as other pursuits. She had groups of friends all over the United States, including her treasured friendship with her Ya-Ya sisters. Suzy had a green thumb, grew gorgeous indoor plants, and loved her outdoor space. She grew beautiful flower, vegetable and butterfly gardens, frequently captivated by the small wonders in her backyard.
If you spent any time in Suzy’s house, you would have seen that she surrounded herself with all the things she loved. Whether it be her extensive Stephen King collection, her photo albums of Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli and her family, her Wizard of Oz collectibles, her love of Halloween and creepy things, or her ever-present Christmas decorations, Suzy believed in keeping things near her that brought her joy. Illustrating this belief, she insisted that her ashes were to be combined with her beloved dog Duffy’s ashes. She and Duffy will be together forever as we honor her last wish.
Everyone who knew Suzy spoke of her ever-present smile and contagious sense of humor. Her quick wit and unflappable character were two of her most admirable qualities. Just don’t call her Susan. She gave everyone a single warning, after which one would risk incurring her wrath.
Suzy is survived by five siblings and their spouses: Russell Lewis (Lori), Colby (Lewis) Walls and John Walls, Andrew Lewis and Kirsten Hedegaard, James Lewis and Daina Lewis and finally Greg Lewis and Sarah Moran, as well as her three fur babies: Indigo, Quinn and Rainbow.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday December 29th, 2023. Time and Location TBD. Please visit Suzy’s Facebook page for updates https://www.facebook.com/IndigoHawk
